The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Review

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Review
By Simon Jago

TheHobbit1-ReviewThere has been a lot of talk about The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, not only because it’s Peter Jackson’s first revisit to Middle Earth since the large success of the Lord of the Rings trilogy but because you can watch the film in 3D Higher Frame Rate screenings for a more immersive experience. Now I’m not going to get into that in this review, but you can read my blog post ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected High Frame Rate Journey – 48 FPS Good or Bad?’ to hear my thoughts on the matter, this review however is purely Hobbits…and Dwarves…and Wizards, Orcs, Dragons you get the picture. The Hobbit: An Unexpected High Frame Rate Journey – 48 FPS Good or Bad?

48 FPS Good or Bad? By Simon Jago

When I first heard that Peter Jackson was going to be realising ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ in a high frame rate 3D version I was immediately interested to see how it could enhance the cinema experience. 48 frames per second is double the usual cinematic 24 frames per second and as recommended by the New Zealand-er himself it was the way he intended his film to be viewed. Is 48 frames the future? Or is it just the new in thing like 3D and a potential cash cow for Hollywood production companies.

The Amazing Spider-Man Review
By Simon Jago

Amazing Spider-Man ReviewOne of the most unnecessary film remake/reboots to ever be conceived, the Amazing Spider-Man restarts the web slinging franchise just ten years on from the original by Sam Raimi and only five years since his less than becoming third installment. The film for the rest of this review shall be known as the Atrocious Spider-Man as there is nothing remotely amazing about it, other than its ability to surprise you at every turn with even more mind-numbing stupidity  Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man was rough around the edges but at least it entertained and some of its more cliche’ elements could be forgiven as it was one of the fore-running comic book movies to lead the way for ‘Hurricane Marvel’ to would swamp our cinema screens in disappointment for years to follow.

Rise of the Guardians Review

Rise of the Guardians Review
By Simon Jago

RiseOfTheGuardiansReviewIt seems to me that the film industry has become a bit of a cesspit for soulless computer generated kids films pumped out on an assembly line with stories as shallow as a paddling pool and graphics that look as if they’ve been created by some spotty teenager in his bedroom. Coming soon… A banana’s struggle to overcome racism in a world dominated by bigot apples. A collection of bed bugs must rally together to win the race and along the way realise that friendship is more important than winning. A talking salmon proves to the world that he can become the greatest ping pong champion but learns that it doesn’t matter about proving your worth to anyone as long as you value yourself for who you are… the list goes on. However, does Dreamworks’ latest computer generated feature Rise of the Guardians follow this all to familiar trend?
